Departmental Scope of Services

Labor and Delivery (L&D) is a 16-bed unit that offers both inpatient and outpatient medical/surgical services to pregnant and up to six-week postpartum women of all ages. The unit has nine Labor and Delivery Rooms, two ORs, three PACU beds, and a six-bed triage area, including a private exam room.

Types of Patients Served

We are capable of managing low-risk pregnancies as well as high-risk pregnancies such as preterm labor, Magnesium Sulfate therapy, hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and lupus. We have approximately 2,200 deliveries a year and assess 4,000 triage patients annually. All pregnant patients are triaged in L&D for multiple complaints. Our Women's Health Associates has 14 midwives on staff who run our triage services and manage private patients.

Overview of Department Services

We take a team approach to care in Labor and Delivery. The physicians, anesthesiologists, pediatricians, SCNs, clerks, scrub techs and nurses work together to ensure comprehensive and safe patient care. Our team focuses on open communication between all providers. We focus on patient safety and maintain the highest patient satisfaction scores in the hospital. Our shared governance model makes L&D a great place to work.

Staffing Model

L&D is staffed on projected census, acuity, experience and competency level in keeping with staff/patient ratio as per guidelines published by AWOHNN and ACOG. Senior clinical nurses, in collaboration with the nurse manager, lead the unit on a daily basis to make appropriate patient assignments to ensure patient safety and good outcomes for mom and baby.

Our Labor and Delivery unit is a huge family. The midwives, doctors, anesthesiologists and nurses trust each other, value each other's opinions, and work together to give not only quality medical care but, most importantly, loving support to our patients, their baby (or babies) and their families.
