What to Expect at the ER: Our priority is to treat each person in our emergency rooms as fully, safely and quickly as possible. We see patients based on how serious their conditions are. Patients are not seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more about what to expect at the ER.

Emergency Stroke Care

Timely stroke treatment is a staple of our emergency care. We are designated by the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems (MIEMSS) as a primary stroke center for stroke care supporting favorable patient outcomes.

Emergency Heart Care

MIEMSS also recognizes us as a Designated Cardiac Interventional Center for our quick and effective heart attack treatment, particularly care for ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), the most common type of heart attack.

Emergency Mental Health Care

We treat both adult and pediatric patients who are experiencing a mental health crisis, offering services including:

  • Behavioral health assessments
  • Treatment plans that may include referrals for continued care (inpatient/partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient programs, etc.)
  • Crisis intervention

Emergency Pediatric Care

We offer quick access to comprehensive care for many emergency medial conditions affecting children and adolescents, including mental health crises. Learn more

Emergency Sexual Assault Care

Sexual assault victims who come to our ED receive medical treatment for their injuries. Then, we explain to them their options for next steps, which may include being transferred to a designated sexual assault and domestic violence treatment center for a forensic examination.

Immediate Access to Specialty Care

Often after emergency care is provided, patients need direct access to specialty care. In addition to our emergency care team, UM St. Joseph Medical Center has on-call specialists in areas including:
