Balance disorders can turn your world upside down.
Problems with your balance can turn basic activities such as tying your shoes, walking or simply standing or sitting up into daunting tasks. Falls due to balance disorders can lead to injury, disability, loss of independence and a decreased quality of life. Physical therapists and occupational therapists can work with you to help improve your balance and decrease your risk for falls.
Possible causes for balance disorders can include:
- Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV)
- Meniere’s Disease
- Musculoskeletal problems
- Blood pressure (Orthostatic Hypotension)
- Neurological disorders
- Spinal injury
The treatment of balance disorders will depend upon the cause of the disorder. The aim of the treatments can include directly treating the cause of the disorder, neuromuscular re-education for recalibration of senses, substitutions of other senses to aid with balance, and adaptation of tasks for increased safety and independence.
The rehab staff will work to educate you on the causes of your balance disorder and help you to increase your quality of life and return back to safe living.
