Critical Care Residency Program for Advanced Practice Providers

The Critical Care Residency Program for Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC) is a one-year, post-graduate training program.
The program trains APPs in a wide range of technical and procedural skills by sharing knowledge through simulation, educational courses and clinical rotations.

- Preparation - This intensive training program will allow you to advance your understanding of critical care medicine by managing patients, participating in interactive simulation courses and learning ultrasound techniques.
- Knowledge - Your experience will include training in medical and surgical intensive care units. Patients’ conditions include a wide spectrum of acute illness involving multi-organ failure. Surgical services include general surgery, thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, orthopedics and surgical oncology. Procedural services include interventional pulmonology, interventional cardiology and interventional radiology. Additionally, UM BWMC is a certified primary stroke center.
- Mentorship - You will spend time working directly with other experienced APPs and critical care physicians to learn evidence-based practices.

- You recently graduated from, or are in a second-year of an approved physician associate program, or
- You graduated or are in your last semester of an approved acute care nurse practitioner program.

You will work as a member of the critical care team and develop greater independence over the course of the 12-month training program. The experience will include completing admissions, note writing, presenting on rounds, calling consults, ordering/interpreting diagnostic testing, understanding critical care billing and performing bedside procedures.
Under the mentorship of an experienced APP or attending physician, you will have direct supervision of all patient care. Dedicated educational time will be provided with structured learning on common critical care medical diagnoses and opportunities to practice skills in a simulation environment with high-fidelity mannequins.
In addition to on-site education, independent study will be required to reinforce information observed in the clinical environment. Completion of the program includes local presentation or publication of an evidenced-based research project.
Time Commitment and Expectations
If selected for the program, you will be expected to attend the following:
- Work in an unpredictable, fast-paced environment
- Work 5 – 6 days per week, including on weekends, nights and some holidays
- Residents must attend all lectures, simulations and clinical rotations. This includes clinical and educational time.
- Educational time will be protected
You will learn how to care for critically ill patients using evidence-based practice. This will include the management of ventilators, dialysis/plasmapheresis machines, intra-aortic balloon pump, vasoactive agents and antibiotics as well as interpretation of radiographic studies, laboratory results and ultrasound.
Additionally, you will learn important skills regarding interacting with families, end-of-life care and the involvement of palliative care.
Procedural skills will include intubation, ultrasound-guided central line placement, arterial line placement, bronchoscopy, thoracentesis, chest tube placement, paracentesis, lumbar puncture, bedside tracheostomy and percutaneous ultra-sound guided gastrostomy tube placement.
Elective time can be spent with palliative care, infectious disease, cardiology, nephrology, neurology, and interventional pulmonology. Structured education will include grand rounds, M&M, journal club, radiology interpretation and ultrasound training. FCCS and ENLS courses will be included. An evidence-based research project will be supported with the goal of being locally presented or published.
