The Critical Care Unit at University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center offers the highest quality care to patients facing critical illnesses that require advanced monitoring during an inpatient hospital stay.

Our team of critical care and pulmonology experts provides compassionate care and 24/7 supervision to patients who have experienced a major surgery or procedure, are suffering from life-threatening illnesses or need specialized care as a result of a medical diagnosis of cancer or other diseases, such as heart or vascular disease.

Using state-of-the-art technology available in our critical care unit, our critical care team is ready to care for you and your loved ones when it matters most. 

Unit Features

UM BWMC’s new critical care unit was designed with efficiency in mind to ensure our providers have the tools and technology needed to manage any emergency, now and in the future.

The new unit contains several innovative resources to better care for patients, including:

  • Two large resuscitation rooms with necessary equipment and space for 10+ medical providers to coordinate life-saving care at the same time
  • 22 large patient rooms
  • Advanced bedside monitors that continuously track and transmit vital signs to the medical team
  • Command center where data from all patients on the unit are transmitted and viewed by the care team on a 24/7 basis
  • Multiple data ports to connect additional monitoring devices based on specific patient care needs

Our Providers

Our team of physicians, nurses and medical professionals are specially trained in critical care medicine, as well as several conditions and diseases affecting the lungs, kidneys and respiratory system. Together, they offer the full spectrum of critical care services.

UM BWMC critical care experts work closely with many different specialists to coordinate care, including anesthesiology, pulmonary medicine, cardiovascular medicine, cardiovascular surgery, vascular surgery, neurosurgery, neurology, nephrology, cancer and surgery. This keeps the patient’s care as seamless and efficient as possible.

Critical Care Residency Program

UM BWMC is also committed to training the next generation of critical care providers. Our one-year residency program prepares newly graduated advanced practice providers with a wide range of technical and procedural skills needed to manage complex care needs.
