To promote good health for people of all ages, UM BWMC’s Community Outreach Department is offering a broad variety of in-person exercise classes to UM BWMC team members and the local community.

Our fall classes begin in September 2022. They will be held in the Community Wellness Center in the Outpatient Care Center (255 Hospital Drive, Glen Burnie, MD 21061). Pre-registration is required as spots are limited. Face masks are required.

Yoga for Stroke Patients (Tuesdays, 10-11:30 am)

Yoga can be beneficial to continued recovery for stroke survivors. It can increase strength and flexibility, improve balance, coordination, and posture, improve breathing and the cardiovascular system, increase bone strength, improve brain function, decrease stress and lower blood pressure. This class is recommended for any stroke survivor who has completed rehabilitation, regardless of level of ability. Physician consent is required and participants are asked to bring their own yoga mat. 

Yoga for Living with Pain (Tuesdays, 1-2 pm)

Participants with chronic pain conditions such as arthritis, back pain, fibromyalgia, migraines and joint replacements are welcome. These classes use intentionally chosen yoga practices including breathing, gentle movement, shapes, and meditation that are proven effective in inducing the relaxation response in the mind and body. This enables the student to reduce their perception of pain, improve mobility, decrease inflammation and improve sleep quality. Classes will build on each other and a home practice is encouraged. No previous yoga experience required.

Prenatal Yoga (Tuesdays, 5:15-6:15 pm)

Pregnancy brings challenges, including many structural and hormonal changes. In this class, we will address those challenges and meet them with guided breathwork and poses that encourage and address prenatal physiology. You will be led through a sequence of yoga postures and mediation that is suitable for all trimesters.

Zumba (Tuesdays, 6:30-7:30 pm)

Come join the dance party! Have fun with this high energy music class that incorporates fast and slow rhythms and interval training to get your heart rate up. This class combines all elements of fitness-cardio, strength building, flexibility and balance to boost your energy.

Level 1 Vinyasa (Wednesdays, 5-6 pm)

Recommended props: 1 blanket, 1-2 blocks

This Level 1 Vinyasa class involves standing, sitting, kneeling and lying flat in coordination with specific yoga asanas (poses) designed to bring together the body, mind and spirit. It will help you to gain a better understanding and awareness of your inner strength. This is a refreshing, encouraging and fun class! 

Pilates (Thursdays, 5:30-6:30 pm)

Pilates is a form of exercise that concentrates on strengthening the body with an emphasis on core strength. Along with yoga postures, this class increases your strength and flexibility, which helps to improve general fitness and overall well-being.
