UM BWMC offers a wide range of education opportunities for expecting parents. Some include the different birthing practices offered, parental education for first timers, breastfeeding workshops and more:

  • Essentials of Breastfeeding
    This course will cover the basics of breastfeeding including advantages of breastfeeding, initiating breastfeeding, various breastfeeding positions, establishing and identifying a good latch, and feeding and pumping guidelines.
  • Cesarean Birth Preparation
    For families planning a cesarean birth, our Labor and Delivery staff will explain and answer your questions about preparation for surgery, medication and anesthesia, as well as skin-to-skin and breastfeeding.
  • Childbirth Express/Refresher Class
    Discussion will provide an overview of labor and birth, what to expect when coming to the hospital, breathing and relaxation techniques to manage early labor, and anesthesia options.
  • Lactation Support Group
    Connect and learn with mothers in the community about the challenges and successes of breastfeeding, no reservation necessary.
  • Natural Birth Preparation
    For parents who wish to practice non-pharmaceutical pain relief methods during labor.
  • Newborn Care Workshop
    This hands-on class teaches new parents and grandparents how to care for their babies with knowledge and confidence. The 3½ hour class covers basic infant care such as bathing, diapering, cord care, and soothing a baby.
  • Storks Nest – Prenatal Education
    Class topics include the importance of prenatal care, what to expect during labor and delivery, breastfeeding, basic infant care, and safe sleep. Participants can earn points by attending the Stork’s Nest education classes, going to their prenatal care appointments, and adopting other healthy behaviors. Points can be redeemed in the Stork’s Nest store for a variety of infant care items including diapers, clothes, and car seats.
  • Pascal Women’s Center Tour
    Get acquainted with UM BWMC and its high quality facilities and services offered for growing families.
