UMMC’s Career Academy has more than 40 community partners and partnership schools that work together to offer employment opportunities and free job training in Baltimore.

Together these organizations provide career training, professional development, support services and assistance with hiring events to prepare and refer potential employees.

What the Career Academy Offers

The Career Academy provides workforce training for adults, such as certified apprenticeship programs, career readiness instruction, GED classes and computer literacy or IT training for community members.  

UMMC team members may take advantage of the myriad of Career Academy resources including coaching services and wraparound supports.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

This 8-week, full-time, paid training program leads to CNA licensure and job placement.

Trainees will learn basic nursing and personal care skills as well as safety, emergency and infection-control procedures. They will also learn customer service and communication skills.

To participate you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a Maryland resident
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have 9th-grade reading and math abilities
  • Be able to pass criminal background and drug screening
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Have a valid ID

Healthcare Fundamentals

This 6-week introductory class is for those interested in working in administrative or clerical jobs in the healthcare industry. It teaches people skills and other soft skills, such as time management, communication and listening. Participants will earn Microsoft Office certification and will volunteer within the hospital setting at UMMC.

To participate you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Be a Baltimore City resident
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Be able to pass criminal background and drug screening
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Have a valid ID

Microsoft Computer and Digital Skills Training

This program helps people gain the computer skills that are in demand in today's workplace. Using an online platform to study independently, you can increase your skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook and learn how to conduct internet research. The program takes 12-16 weeks.

To participate you must:

  • Be able to read and write at a basic adult level
  • Have access to a computer with internet access

IT Certifications

These include self-paced online programs to become a Microsoft Office Specialist using the Certiport online learning platform. You can access CompTIA IT Fundamentals and CompTIA A+ certification courses to earn these industry-recognized credentials. Most courses can be completed within 4-6 months.

To participate you must:

  • Have a working knowledge of computer functions and applications, including Microsoft Office
  • Have access to a computer with internet access

Patient Care Technician (PCT) Training

Licensed CNAs can improve their direct patient care skills in this 5-6 month training that Career Academy offers through Baltimore City Community College. Trainees will learn wound care, catheterizations, venipuncture, specimen collection and how to conduct EKGs. Our program will develop an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for you to help you meet your goals. Participants who complete the program will earn the Certified Patient Care Technician (CPCT) credential through the National Healthcare Association (NHA).

To participate you must:

  • Be a board-certified CNA
  • Have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Have 1 year of experience as a CNA
  • Be able to pass criminal background and drug screening
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Possess a valid ID

Patient Care Technician (PCT) Apprenticeship

This apprenticeship program offers additional credentials for CNAs through a partnership with the Community College of Baltimore County. It includes 144 hours of clinical instruction and 2000 hours of on-the-job training. Apprentices master advanced nursing skills and EKG fundamentals. Certificate awarded upon program completion.

To participate you must:

  • Be a board-certified CNA
  • Have Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Have 1 year of experience as a CNA
  • Be able to pass criminal background and drug screening
  • Eligible to work in the United States
  • Possess a valid ID

 

Pharmacy Technician Apprenticeship

This 4-month training program leads to certification and job placement. Apprentices complete computer-based instruction on pharmacy theory, simulations and job shadowing. Candidates must pass the Maryland Board of Nursing certification exam.

To participate you must:

  • Be 18 years of age or older
  • Have a high school diploma or GED
  • Have 9th-grade reading and math abilities
  • Be able to pass criminal background and drug screening
  • Be eligible to work in the United States
  • Have a valid ID

Professionals Ready for Opportunities in Healthcare Services (PROHS)

This 5-week training and volunteer program can help you launch a career in healthcare. People receive training in soft skills, like communication, listening and time management, as well as computer basics and job searching. They receive interview preparation and on-the-job experience. They learn about ways to overcome barriers and keep a job for the long term.
