Any UM Shore Regional Health or UM Shore Medical Group nurse who has made a special connection with a patient or family can be nominated for the DAISY Award.

UM Shore DAISY Committee members meet monthly to choose an honoree, who receives a surprise visit from Chief Nursing Officer Jenny Bowie, a special treat and prizes.

About the DAISY Award

The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses honors the memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at age 33 of immune thrombocytopenia (ITP), an auto-immune disease. His family, profoundly impressed by the clinical skills and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, created this international award to show gratitude for nurses everywhere.

Anyone can nominate a UM Shore Regional Health nurse for the DAISY Award, including patients, families, and fellow nurses and health care providers. Complete the nomination form online at or pick up a paper copy of the form at the nurses’ stations.

Monthly UM Shore DAISY Winner

Leslie Collier, RN (October 2023 DAISY Honoree)

Congratulations to October’s Daisy Award winner, Leslie Collier, RN, who works in the Emergency Department at UM Shore Medical Center at Easton. Leslie was nominated by a fellow team member for the compassion and generosity she demonstrated to a single mom and her children in the Emergency Department.

When it was determined that the patient needed to be admitted, the patient’s children, ages 4 and 6, needed to be placed in temporary foster care. During Leslie's lunch break, she went to Wal-Mart and bought the children over $100 worth of clothes so they could have fresh items at their foster home.

“I'm sure that mom is so grateful to know that a nurse cared enough to go spend her money on a stranger's children,” the nomination read. “Not only that, but it helped remind me that some people still do simple acts of kindness for others for no reason other than to help them.”

“Leslie’s compassion toward her patients is truly uplifting,” said Tisha Thompson, Director, Emergency Services. “Her empathy and kindness will long be remembered by the family she served. She is truly an advocate to her patients and an asset to Shore Regional Health.”

As part of winning the DAISY award, Leslie will be nationally recognized on the DAISY website. She also received a certificate, a DAISY pin and a "Healer's Touch" Statue. As tradition holds, she and her team were also treated to cinnamon rolls.
