Inpatient BH Stats

In early 2019, our expanded dramatically in order to meet the needs of the surrounding community. See a video tour of our expansion and renovation

The University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus inpatient psychiatry unit receives patients from the Baltimore, Washington and Northern Virginia area.

Patients in the 37-bed unit typically suffer from an acute crisis, usually attributed to a psychiatric illness and/or substance abuse that deems them a harm to themselves or someone else.

Our interdisciplinary behavioral health team of psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, occupational and recreational therapists, addiction counselors and clinical nurse from the University of Maryland School of Medicine work together to develop a plan that will encourage psychiatric stability on the unit and promote positive patient outcomes once discharged. While on the unit, each patient receives:

  • Medication management
  • Individualized treatment planning
  • Substance use treatment services
  • Individual, group and occupational therapy

Discharge and Follow-up

Because treatment for many psychiatric illnesses is a life-long journey, connecting people back to the community is key. The inpatient teams refer patients to a variety of outpatient community mental health organizations such as our outpatient behavioral health clinics. The teams also help patients gain access to a variety of local community services. These might include:

  • Mobile treatment
  • Inpatient substance abuse rehab
  • Crisis stabilization units
  • Partial hospitalization programs
  • Intensive outpatient treatment programs
  • Assertive community treatment teams
  • Residential rehabilitation and transitional housing
  • Follow-up appointments

With some acute cases, treatment teams have pursued guardianship as well as assisted patients with applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA) benefits.

In short, the inpatient psychiatric unit works to ensure the best physical and mental health outcomes, improve quality of life and discourage hospital re-admission.
