Lung Cancer Symptoms

Lung cancer may not cause symptoms right away. Often, lung cancers do not cause any symptoms until they have spread.

Possible symptoms include:

  • Blood in your spit or phlegm
  • Chest pain
  • Wheezing and coughing that doesn’t go away or worsens over time
  • Fatigue or unexplained weight loss
  • Hoarseness or shortness of breath

While these symptoms can be caused by another condition, it’s still important to tell your doctor right away if you have them. Even nonsmokers can get lung cancer.

If lung cancer is suspected, your doctor may refer you to the UM Capital Region Health cancer care team for further workup and treatment as necessary.

Lung Cancer Treatment

If diagnosed with lung cancer, your course of treatment will depend on the type of lung cancer you have and how far it has spread (staging).

Our specialists are highly trained to perform the latest and most effective lung cancer treatments, including:

  • Surgery
  • Chemotherapy - use of medicines to shrink or kill cancer
  • Radiation therapy - use of high-energy rays to kill cancer
  • Targeted therapy - procedure for blocking the growth and spread of cancer cells

Many times, patients get a combination of treatments. Our team will help you determine which treatments are best for you.
