The VPP offers educational programs tailored to the needs of our Baltimore City youth with strong focus surrounding decision making and future goal setting:

  • My Future – My Career is held at the Shock Trauma Center as a 4-6 weeks program, designed to engage youth who are at risk for either becoming victims and/or victimizing others. Students focus on goals for higher education and career opportunities.
  • Promoting Healthy Alternatives for Teens (PHAT) is held at the STC or an on-site location as a single session workshop designed to expose youth to the consequences associated with poor decision-making.

Population Served

  • 12 – 18 years of age
  • Enrolled in a Baltimore City school
  • Possible victim/perpetrator of violence

At Risk for

  • Dropping out of school
  • Delinquent behavior
  • Criminal activity

Group of At-Risk Youth

  • Expose a group of at-risk youth to specific career paths at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and University of Maryland School of Nursing
  • Students talk with professionals at various levels and are given a list of resources in the community, including ways to get involved
  • Students are given a tour of the STC through the path of a patient, including the helipad, Trauma Resuscitation Unit, Hyperbaric Chamber, and Intensive Care Unit
  • Students visit the STC MASTRI Lab for a hands-on clinical simulation with medical equipment

  • Plant "seeds" for pro-social behavior, problem solving & future orientation
  • Increase discussions about "taboo topics" & important life decisions
  • Decrease risk factors for violence
