UM Capital Region Health Targets Breast Cancer

Dr. Katerina Tsiapali, a fellowship-trained breast surgeon, has joined UM Capital Region Health to address the disparities in breast health in Prince George’s County. Dr. Tsiapali brings years of experience in treating all types and stages of breast cancer in both women and men.

Breast cancer continues to be a concern in Maryland and no more so than in Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland, particularly among women of color. African American women diagnosed with breast cancer in Prince George’s County have a higher mortality rate than white women in the county and women in general across the state. This disparity is at the forefront of Dr. Tsiapali’s plans to develop a comprehensive Breast Health program at UM Capital Region Health.

As she builds the UM Capital Region Health Comprehensive Breast Program, Dr. Tsiapali will continue to see patients in Bowie and Annapolis and work with area radiation and medical oncologists in a multi-disciplinary manner to create personalized care plans for her patients.
