During this year of clinical training, fellows will gain a broad experience in general and transplant hepatology.

Mentorship will be provided by our team of five ABIM-CAQ certified transplant hepatologists, who will supervise all clinical and scholarly activities, including the performance of gastrointestinal procedures / liver biopsies.

The UMMC liver transplant program is a high-volume, innovative program, with an active live donor component.

Fellows will benefit from daily multidisciplinary interactions with transplant surgeons, as well as transplant specific nurse coordinators, pharmacists, advanced practice providers, social workers, psychologists and nutritionists. Ample opportunities exist to observe organ procurements and transplant surgeries. This coordinated and synergistic approach will provide a well-rounded training experience that exceeds ACGME and UNOS requirements to qualify for the Transplant Hepatology CAQ boards.

Fellows will be encouraged to exercise autonomy, and will demonstrate progressive decision-making under faculty guidance, with the expectation of graduating as highly proficient sub-specialists.

Inpatient Liver Service

This is an integrated medical / surgical service which involves the care of patients with advanced liver disease, and those who have undergone liver transplantation. Daily multidisciplinary inpatient rounds with the surgical transplant team provides specialized education in immunosuppressant and post-surgical management. The fellow will be expected to develop leadership and collaborative skills by leading a team of medical students, resident and GI fellows, as well as coordinating with the transplant team.

Outpatient Clinics

The fellow will participate in specialized transplant clinics (Transplant Evaluation clinic / post liver transplant clinic) as well as general hepatology clinics.
