The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine provides a comprehensive training program that utilizes the resources of our Division as well as other Departments on the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus. The three major facilities in which our fellows train are the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the Baltimore VA Medical Center (located across the street from UMMC), and the UMMC Midtown Medical Center. UMMC is the principle hospital for our fellowship training program and for our Division. All UMMC physicians are faculty of the University of Maryland School of Medicine. We also have resources available from other local institutions, including the National Institutes of Health and the Johns Hopkins University.

University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC)

The University of Maryland Medical Center is a major tertiary/quaternary and primary care facility with approximately 900 beds. The Medical Center cares for more than 30,000 inpatients and 500,000 outpatients each year. Doctors, nurses, students, clinical pharmacists, and support staff work as a team to promote unified and comprehensive care for every patient.

There are multiple medical teams at UMMC, including 8 medical services. There are numerous critical care units, including the Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), Coronary Care Unit (CCU), Cardiac Surgery ICU (CSICU), Surgery ICU (SICU), Neurologic ICU, and others within the Maryland Shock Trauma Center. Many of these units have step-down units (IMC) as well. Several specialty areas are located within UMMC, including the Bone Marrow Transplant Unit and the Greenebaum Cancer Center. Medicine residents provide patient care under the direct supervision of faculty, and subspecialty fellows serve as consultants and participate in specialized care.

Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VA)

In January 1993, the new Baltimore VA Medical Center opened adjacent to UMMC. Both hospitals are conveniently connected by a covered walkway, which facilitates integration of educational and clinical activities. Thus, the Division covers both hospitals with fully integrated faculty and provides a single didactic conference series. The Baltimore VA Medical Center serves as the central referral hospital for pulmonary diseases serving West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Delaware. It is a 324-bed facility and a key component of both the clinical and research training programs. Fellows care for a patient population different from that seen at UMMC.

The Baltimore facility is only one of two VA Medical Centers in the country that have two large federally funded programs in geriatrics -- the Geriatric Research Education Clinical Center (GRECC) and a Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center. It is ranked among the top 5 percent of VA Medical Centers in VA-funded research.

UMMC Midtown Medical Center

In 1999, the Midtown Medical Center became part of the University of Maryland Medical System. The Midtown campus provides care in more than 30 medical specialties and serves about 100,000 patients each year. In 2010, a new facility was opened which includes state-of-the-art operating suites, an 18-bed intensive care unit, a new Sleep Disorders Center, and a new Post-Acute Specialty Program (PASP) and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program. The UMMC Midtown Campus has continued to grow and expand its services over the past few years as part of its ongoing commitment to support the health of the Baltimore community. The new Outpatient Tower will be opening this year
