Meet UMMC's NP/PA Leaders
The University of Maryland Medical Center has established a Leadership Model to foster and guide successful advanced practice providers. Within this collaborative framework, Lead NPs provide mentoring, program support, human resources guidance and monitor NP/PA practice and outcomes for our team.
Carmel A. McComiskey, DNP, CRNP, FAANP, FAAN
Carmel is the Director of Nurse Practitioners at University of Maryland Medical Center and holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, and Instructor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is the co-chair of the Graduate Education and Practice committee of the UM Nursing partnership.
Carmel is a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner at University of Maryland Medical Center, Division of Pediatric Surgery and Urology, where she began in 1981, first as a nurse coordinator and in 1996, became a NP, centering her specialty care around managing children with intestinal failure, children with long term bowel and bladder problems. In 2007, she initiated an NP managed Center for Bowel and Bladder management which sees patients with both daytime and nocturnal enuresis and/or encopresis.
In addition to serving on numerous committees, teams and councils at UMMC, Carmel is also a member of many professional committees and organizations including Sigma Theta Tau International, American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Associates and Practitioners, and the American Pediatric Surgical Nurses' Association, an organization where she is a charter member, served on its Board of Directors for many years and served as president from 1999-2000 and was the recipient of the APSNA Founder's award in 2007. Most recently she worked with the ANA to revise the scope and standards of Pediatric nurses and APNs.
Carmel's clinical interests include voiding dysfunction and pediatric obesity and pediatric bariatric treatment. She served as the co-investigator on a Phase 3 clinical trial of tolterodine and is currently evaluating the efficacy of the treatment of voiding dysfunction. She has given many professional presentations and published articles in many journals. She is an editor of Nursing Care of the Pediatric Surgical Patient and served as the Associate Editor of Bariatric Nursing and Surgical Patient Care from 2010-2013.
Carmel is involved with community service through her work on the St. Mark Pastoral Council and the Parent Advisory Council at the John Carroll School. She was the recent keynote speaker at the American Association of University Women- Harford Association's Educational Foundation Awards Luncheon "Judith Resnick Mathematics/Science Awards".
These Clinical Program Managers, or Leads, provide mentoring, organizational support, and leadership to the nurse practitioners and physician assistants in specific areas. In addition, the LEADS will address collaboration and offer support to our physician colleagues who request additional advanced practice personnel and ongoing collaboration for patient care. They will also partner with the managers of the nursing care units where they provide care to assure collaboration and education of the nursing staff.

Kim Reck, CRNP
Clinical Program Manager and Lead NP for Cardiology Services
Kim Reck is the Clinical Program Manager of Nurse Practitioners in Cardiology. Kim completed a post masters program as an Adult NP in 1989, and initially worked in an outpatient Hematology/Oncology role. She has worked in cardiology since 1992, developing several highly successful programs for inpatient and outpatient nurse practitioner practice, while maintaining an active clinical practice. She has been a Clinical Program Manager since 2003, and was one of the first to occupy that role in the University of Maryland System. She mentors new NPs and NP students, and is an instructor in the Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program at University of Maryland School of Nursing. Kim effectively promotes her vision for advancing the role of the NP in cardiology services.

Dr. Shari Simone, MS, CRNP
Clinical Program Manager and Lead NP Women's and Children's Services
Shari Simone is an experienced pediatric nurse practitioner in the PICU, where she developed the pediatric critical care NP role. She has been an NP since 1995. She has published extensively and has both written and edited pediatric critical care chapters and textbooks. She was the author of an article on defining the role of the PICU NP in Critical Care Medicine and most recently has an article accepted in Pediatric Critical Care on post-graduate training for pediatric critical care NPs. She is an experienced researcher and is currently the PI on a sedation weaning study in the PICU. She earned a DNP in May 2011 and was received the prestigious DNP Capstone Award by the UM Nursing Faculty. She holds a faculty appointment at the SON and has taught at the University of PA. Shari has a multitude of pediatric nursing experiences; she has worked and held leadership roles at Johns Hopkins PICU, and Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.

Joseph Larivey, MSN, CRNP
Clinical Program Manager, Department of Orthopaedics
Joseph Larivey, MSN, CRNP, is the clinical program manager and lead for the division of orthopaedics. In addition to orthopaedic injuries, he also specializes in perioperative management. Prior to his current role, Joseph served as a senior family nurse practitioner and registered nurse. He received his registered nurse diploma from the Millard Fillmore School of Nursing in Buffalo, N.Y., before pursuing a BSN from the University of Rochester and MSN from Bowie State University in Maryland. Before arriving at UMMC in 1999, Joseph was a registered nurse at the University of Rochester's Strong Memorial Hospital and at Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk, N.Y.

Brooke Anderson, MS, CRNP
Brooke Anderson, MS, CRNP is a Nurse Practitioner who is nationally board certified in Adult Acute Care, and graduated from the University of Nebraska with a Master's in Science. Her area of clinical expertise include: Traumatic Injury, Shock, the Use of Advanced Practice NP's in the ICU, and the Development and Implementation of Critical Care NP Fellowship Program.

Colleen Gaffney, MS, CRNP is the NP Clinical Program Manager for the Neurosurgical Team. Colleen graduated from the University of Maryland Acute Care Masters Program specializing in Trauma, Critical Care and Emergency Nursing.

Barbara A. Miller, RN, MS, CRNP is a graduate of the University of Maryland School of Nursing and is nationally certified in Adult Primary Care. Her clinical area of expertise is the care of the post-surgical patient in an intermediate care setting.

Jo Ann Sikora, MS, CRNP is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner who graduated from the University of Maryland School of Nursing with a MS degree. Her areas of clinical expertise include Cardiothoracic Surgery and Critical Care Medicine.
