Nuclear Medicine Procedure Preparation

Bone Scan

  1. If you had pertinent x-rays taken at another facility, please bring them with you to the appointment.
  2. This is a two-part study.
  3. If your physician gave you a written order, you must bring that order with you.
  4. Check-in at outpatient registration ½ hour before your appointment.
  5. Report to Imaging Services after registering.
  6. You will receive an injection.
  7. You will be instructed to return approximately 3 hours later for the scan itself.
  8. The scan takes about 45 minutes.
  9. There is no other preparation before or in between the injection and the scan.

Biliary Scan or HIDA Scan

  1. Nothing to eat or drink 4 hours before the exam.
  2. You must have eaten in the past 10-12 hours.
  3. You should eat breakfast by 8 a.m.
  4. If your physician gave you a written order, you must bring that order with you.
  5. Check-in at outpatient registration ½ hour before your appointment.
  6. Report to Imaging Services after registering.

Gastric Emptying Study

  1. Nothing to eat or drink after midnight.
  2. If the patient is on REGLAN, they need to stop it 5 days before the exam.
  3. Plan to be in Imaging Services from 7 a.m. to about 11:45 a.m.
  4. If your physician gave you a written order, you must bring that order with you.
  5. Check-in at outpatient registration ½ hour before your appointment.
  6. Report to Imaging Services after registering.
  7. You will be given a breakfast of scrambled eggs and toast with the nuclear isotope at 7 a.m.
  8. From 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. we will be taking images.
  9. Images will also be taken at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.; each of these will take about 1 minute.

Thyroid Uptake and Scan Day 1

  1. If you are on AMIODARONE, please call the Nuclear Medicine technologist at 410-822-1000, Extension 5689.
  2. No Synthoid or Levothyroxine for 4-6 weeks.
  3. No Tapazole or PTU for 7 days.
  4. No imaging exams requiring IV contrast over the past 4-6 weeks.
  5. If your physician gave you a written order, you must bring that order with you.
  6. Check-in at outpatient registration ½ hour before your appointment. Report to Imaging Services after registering.

Sestamibi Parathyroid Scan

  1. There is no preparation for this exam
  2. If your physician gave you a written order, you must bring that order with you.
  3. Check-in at outpatient registration ½ hour before your appointment.
  4. Report to Imaging Services after registering.
  5. You will be injected at 7 a.m. with the nuclear isotope.
  6. Images will be taken around 7:30 a.m. and 9 a.m.
  7. Total exam time is approximately 3 hours.
