Bone Mineral Density (BMD) screening measures BMD in the spine, both hips and a forearm using a form of X-ray. Results are compared to normal bone in a patient of the same age and gender to determine bone loss. BMD testing can indicate risk of getting a fracture. Initially performed to diagnose osteoporosis for women, BMD screening is now also used in men and children who may be experiencing bone loss as the result of disease, eating disorders or certain medications.
