Welcome to the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM BWMC). This site serves as an excellent resource for all levels of nursing students who are utilizing UMMS for school-related clinical experiences.

UM BWMC Opportunities

Student Nurse Positions

The student role is a great opportunity that allows a student nurse to work flexible hours while getting her/his degree. It gives hands-on experience caring for patients of all ages and conditions and it’s a great complement to your formal learning. In addition, we have discovered that transition to a nursing role is easier if you have experience as a student nurse.

Structure of the Student Nurse role

  • Work two shifts per month as a PCT.
  • Any additional shifts worked you are paired with an experienced nurse to care for her/his team of patients only and can assist with nursing care.
  • Opportunity to shadow in a different clinical area.

Eligibility

  • Current nursing student with at least one completed semester
  • Completes a fundamentals class and one clinical shift
  • CNS certification
  • BLS certification from American Heart Association
