Community Wellness Day at Marley Middle School

Hospital team members and volunteers provided health screenings, distributed baby supplies and produce boxes and assisted with Medicaid re-enrollment at annual fall Community Wellness Day.

GLEN BURNIE, MD. (November 2, 2023) The largest turnout of community members in event history participated in University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center's (UM BWMC) fall Community Wellness Day on October 14th at Marley Middle School. The event was made possible thanks to more than 30 hospital volunteers and over 30 representatives from local organizations that came together to offer free health screenings, family-friendly activities, and employment opportunities available at UM BWMC.

"At UM BWMC, we support our community members where they live and work every day by creating more opportunities for people to access health care services and employment resources," said Kathy McCollum, President and CEO of UM BWMC. "We're grateful to our local schools, especially Marley Middle School, as well as organizations and nonprofits who collaborate with us to bring important health screenings, vaccinations, healthy foods, child care resources and career development opportunities into Anne Arundel County neighborhoods and the surrounding areas. Together, we're committed to taking care of our community and meeting their needs."

Three hundred and ninety community members from nearby neighborhoods participated in activities coordinated by UM BWMC, Marley Middle School and community volunteers. Individuals received free produce boxes and baby supplies, as well as a Halloween-themed goody bag with health materials and giveaways from vendors. Almost 100 flu shots were provided, and volunteers shared information about Medicaid plan enrollment. Community members were invited to participate in interactive simulations such as applying a tourniquet to stop bleeding, and demonstrations were held for proper teeth brushing and car seat safety. Individuals also received information on nutrition, women's health, child development, heart and vascular health, mental health, and smoking cessation. Representatives from the hospital's Human Resources Department were available to discuss employment and volunteer opportunities that are currently available.

"Community Wellness Day was a resounding success, with 390 participants engaging with our team member volunteers who presented health resources and educational support on topics like mental health, women's health and child development," said Diane Croghan, Vice President and Chief of Staff at UM BWMC. "By providing free screenings for A1C checks, vascular and heart health, in addition to vaccinating people against the flu, we've not only improved the health of our community, but we are laying the seeds for this community's future health and vitality."
