When making an appointment for the first time with one of our pain specialists at University of Maryland Pain Medicine (UM Pain), we will ask you for your current health insurance information.

Some health insurers require a referral from a physician, while others do not. If your health insurance does not, you can refer yourself at some locations.

If your insurer does require a referral, we will need the name of your primary care physician and/or the referring physician. Please call the office if you have any questions about referrals.

During Your First Visit

Plan on arriving 15 minutes before your appointment to complete an initial pain questionnaire. The pain team will conduct a thorough history and physical examination. In order to provide a comprehensive evaluation, we may request additional information such as:

  • Copies of medical record relevant to your chronic pain
  • Diagnostic test results such as CT scans, MRI results or images
  • Lab results
  • List of current medications
