Our Vision

"In oncology care, we treat the whole patient, not just the cancer."

The vision of the Cancer Institute is to be a preeminent, creative and visionary cancer center of excellence, providing the highest quality of cancer prevention, screening, diagnosis, treatment and survivorship to patients in our community. As a formal affiliate of the nationally-renowned University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center, the UM St. Joseph Cancer Institute exists to enhance quality and extend lives of our cancer patients in a faith-based environment honoring our healing ministry.

The Care Team

The Cancer Institute is dedicated to providing patient-centered care. Our nurses combine exceptional clinical care with compassion and nurturing as they guide patients and families through one of the most difficult journeys of their lives. Our nurses are highly trained and many are oncology-certified nurses (OCN.)

Working closely with medical and nursing staff, nurse navigators guide patients through every step of his or her cancer journey. After meeting with newly diagnosed patients, the navigators provide personalized education, support and referrals to community services and support groups.

Our Multidisciplinary Approach

At the University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center Cancer Institute, each physician has expertise in a specific disease site, yet all share a commitment to multidisciplinary cancer care.

All new cancer patients are seen and evaluated by a team of pathologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and surgeons to discuss every aspect of each diagnosis, the specific cell type and the extent of the disease. By consolidating each case review among specialists from all relevant disciplines, our multidisciplinary approach provides patients with second and often third opinions automatically. This simultaneous melding of various perspectives helps patients and doctors quickly come to agreement on the best course of action.
