The Friedenwald Eye Institute offers the complete range of eye care services, including:

  • Eye examination, evaluation and prescribing of eyeglasses and contact lenses 
  • Screening and treatment for cataracts, including minimally invasive surgery*  and multifocal and toric lens implants
  • Screening for glaucoma and treatment through laser procedures, stand-alone surgery or medication
  • Neuro-ophthalmology to evaluate and treat double vision or diminished vision caused by strokes, tumors, multiple sclerosis, thyroid disease and other conditions
  • Oculoplastic surgery, including cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the eyelids, tear drainage system and eye socket
  • Pediatric ophthalmology, including diagnosis and treatment of amblyopia (lazy eye) and strabismus (crossed eyes)
  • Retina services, including diagnosis and treatment of age-related (wet) macular degeneration and retinal detachments
  • Diagnosis and treatment of uveitis, dry eye syndrome, episcleritis and other corneal issues
  • Screening and treatment for diabetic retinopathy and other diabetes-related issues (the Institute has partnered with the University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology at UMMC Midtown to provide specialized eye care for these patients)  

Our examination rooms are fully equipped with the latest in diagnostic services and state-of-the-art technology, including:

  • Digital fluorescein angiography
  • Spectralis® optical coherence tomography (OCT)
  • Heidelberg retinal tomography (HRT)
  • Humphrey and Goldman visual field testing

* Surgical time for cataract surgery is approximately 15 minutes; patients are able to leave shortly after surgery and can resume most activities the following day
