Volunteers are an important asset to the Child Life Program. They help provide typical play activities to children visiting the University of Maryland Children's Hospital on the inpatient units and outpatient clinics. They also help child life staff maintain a clean and safe environment.
Inpatient Volunteer: Volunteers on the inpatient unit assist in the play rooms or at a child's bedside by providing play or recreational activities for children and families. Typical activities may include holding infants and toddlers, playing with children in our playroom, facilitating arts and crafts activities, playing board or video games, or assisting the child life team with special events.
Outpatient Volunteer: Volunteers in the outpatient clinic assist with play activities in the waiting area with children, adolescents and parents as they are waiting to see the doctor. Outpatient clinic volunteers help children feel more relaxed and comfortable during their visit through the use of activities like reading stories, facilitating arts and craft activities, playing board games, watching a movie together, or playing with toys.
