Volunteers are an important asset to the Child Life Program. They help provide typical play activities to children visiting the University of Maryland Children's Hospital on the inpatient units and outpatient clinics. They also help child life staff maintain a clean and safe environment.

Please email Renee at rheatwole@umm.edu for current volunteer openings.

Volunteer Roles

Volunteers assist in the play rooms, clinic waiting rooms or at a child's bedside by providing play or recreational activities for children and families. Typical activities may include holding infants and toddlers, playing with children in our playroom, facilitating arts and crafts activities, playing board or video games, or assisting the child life team with special events.

Volunteers must:

  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Commit to a schedule of 2-4 hours per week for a total of 75 hours

*** Please note that our volunteers provide services that are strictly comforting in nature and are not able to shadow nurses, doctors, and clinicians or to take vital signs or observe procedures.

Volunteer hours occur between 10am and 7pm, Monday–Friday. Weekend volunteer opportunities are possible after three months of volunteering with the Child Life Program.

Separate from the Child Life Program, UMMC offers the NICU Cuddler Program. Please contact call 410-328-4598 or 410-328-6716 for more information about this program.
