The curriculum provides exposure to diverse training experiences. Residents gain clinical experience in critical care, emergency departments, inpatient wards, operating rooms and ambulatory settings. This broad range of practices will provide a solid foundation for future training in the resident’s chosen specialty.

For the four residents who match to the University of Maryland Ophthalmology program, their curriculum for the Transitional Year will be as follows:

For the Ophthalmology/Transitional Year residents, the general surgery rotation, ambulatory block, and 1½ months of electives are replaced with ophthalmology training. The ophthalmology experience will allow them to transition seamlessly to their ophthalmology training in the PGY2 year.

*IM Cross Coverage month consists of the following weekly schedule:

Thursday On-call day shift with Medical Admitting Officer covering the wards
Friday ICU day shift
Saturday Day shift on IM inpatient ward
Sunday Day shift on IM inpatient ward

**Please be aware that all residents have an additional five days of vacation during the last 10 days of December. It will be either the first five days or the last five days of that 10-day block.
