Internal Medicine Residency

The goal of the Internal Medicine residency program at University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) Midtown Campus is to train the future leaders of Internal Medicine. The program provides a breadth of experience and training opportunities, giving our graduates the foundational education that they will need to fulfill their professional dreams and career aspirations.

Our Internal Medicine Residency Program is affiliated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). The University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus offers a friendly, welcoming and supportive environment for academic medicine in a university-affiliated hospital setting. The combination of a unique blend of ambulatory and inpatient training and mentorship from fulltime University of Maryland School of Medicine internal medicine faculty, including both generalists and sub-specialists, allows residents the opportunity to reach their potential and become outstanding clinicians and future leaders in medicine.

Our History

UMMC Midtown Campus evolved from existing community health care in Baltimore City. Founded in 1881, Maryland General Hospital has a long and rich tradition of serving the medical needs of the local urban community in the midtown section of Baltimore. Established with a mission toward medical education, the hospital opened its own nursing school in 1893 and affiliated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1911. Residencies in internal medicine and ophthalmology were established in 1970’s; the Maryland General ophthalmology residency has since merged with the University of Maryland Ophthalmology program.

In 1999, Maryland General Hospital became part of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), and in 2013, the hospital was renamed the University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus. In 2015, UMMC Midtown formally merged with the University of Maryland Medical Center campus downtown. UMMC Midtown Campus is now one of two locations of the University of Maryland Medical Center, and together they serve as the flagship institution of the University of Maryland Medical System.

A new ten-story, 212,000 square foot Outpatient Tower opened in the fall of 2021 on the Midtown Campus. The establishment of this new center reaffirmed the mission to serve our community by offering innovative, comprehensive chronic disease management in one convenient location. 

UMMC Midtown Campus is now a vibrant 179-bed urban community hospital, providing care in more than 30 medical specialties to more than 130,000 patients annually. Our team of more than 500 doctors and 1,300 employees cares for each patient with expertise and compassion.

The categorical Internal Medicine program is a 3-year program, with 9 residents in each year of training. The Transitional Year program is a 1-year program, with a total of ten PGY1 residents in each year. The Transitional Year curriculum provides robust clinical grounding and exposure prior to pursuing advanced training in diverse specialties, such as radiology, ophthalmology, dermatology, anesthesiology, radiation oncology and physical medicine and rehabilitation.

In addition, residents from the University of Maryland Program in Ophthalmology complete their PGY1 training in the Transitional Year program. A tailored curriculum for those four residents provides a seamless transition from medical school into ophthalmology residency, incorporating 3 months of dedicated ophthalmology training into the Transitional Year experience.. Fellows from the University of Maryland Critical Care Medicine program rotate through our Intensive Care Unit, which is directed by full-time faculty from the University of Maryland Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. As the University of Maryland Sleep Disorders Center is located on our campus, two sleep medicine fellows also train here. Finally, our program's separate inpatient teaching services provides an opportunity to serve as the site of training for internal medicine clerkship students from the University of Maryland School of Medicine as well as the American University of Antigua College of Medicine.
