About Jonathan D. Packer, MD

Dr. Packer is an assistant professor of Orthopaedics at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and a sports medicine physician at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He specializes in sports medicine and arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder and hip. Dr. Packer is an expert in the treatment of cartilage, ligament and tendon injuries with the most advanced and minimally invasive techniques.
Special interests include:

  • glenoid labrum Injuries
  • hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI)
  • labral tears and instability
  • meniscus and cartilage transplantation
  • rotator cuff repair
  • shoulder arthroscopy
Dr. Packer received an undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University. He completed a residency in orthopaedic surgery at Yale-New Haven Hospital and a sports medicine fellowship at Stanford University. Dr. Packer is currently a team physician for the University of Maryland Terrapins. During fellowship, he was an assistant team physician for the Golden State Warriors professional basketball team, Stanford University football team and Notre Dame de Namur University.
Dr. Packer is an accomplished basic science and clinical researcher and has presented his work at national and international meetings. He has published numerous scientific manuscripts in prestigious orthopaedic journals such as The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery and The American Journal of Sports Medicine. His research interests include soft-tissue healing, stem cells and cartilage restoration.
