About Me

Dr. Janet Leath Alexander, a pediatric ophthalmologist, joined the University of Maryland in summer 2013.

Dr. Alexander was named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of Pediatric Ophthalmology by Baltimore magazine in 2020.

She brings to the practice broad skills and training in all areas of pediatric ophthalmology including expertise in the medical and surgical treatment of strabismus, nasolacrimal obstruction, cataract, glaucoma, pathology of the eyelid and orbit and retinal disorders.  

Dr. Alexander earned her bachelor of science in chemical engineering at University of Washington in her hometown of Seattle. After work in research and development at Intel Corporation in Santa Clara, California, she conducted biomedical research at the University of Washington in Seattle.

She then earned her MD from the University of Pittsburgh and completed a surgical internship at Northwestern University in Chicago, ophthalmology residency at George Washington University in Washington, DC and pediatric ophthalmology and strabismus fellowship training at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.

She is dedicated to serving the ophthalmic needs of infants, children and adolescents in the Baltimore area. Her specific professional interests include medical education, outreach to local and international Spanish-speaking populations and international public health.

Her research areas include pediatric uveitis and congenital cataracts, as well as glaucoma. Her personal passions are family and friends, sports, travel and music.
