About Elizabeth M. Nichols, MD

Dr. Nichols is a board-certified radiation oncologist whose areas of focus include women's cancers — breast and gynecologic malignancies. She is the chair of the GammaPod Consortium, a community of medical institutions dedicated to research with the GammaPod — a device developed at the University of Maryland for treating early-stage breast cancers.

She has extensive experience using proton therapy to treat advanced or recurring breast cancers and in combining this treatment with hyperthermia. Dr. Nichols also is experienced in treating patients with brachytherapy, proton therapy and photon therapy.

Dr. Nichols is an associate professor and vice-chair of clinical affairs at the University of Maryland Department of Radiation Oncology.

In 2020, she was named "Physician of the Year" by The Daily Record. Dr. Nichols was named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of Radiation Oncology by Baltimore magazine in 2020 and 2021.

She received her undergraduate education at Duke University, followed by medical school at the University of Maryland. Her internship and residency in radiation oncology were also completed at the University of Maryland.

Dr. Nichols treats a variety of cancers and her clinical research interests focus on breast cancer and gynecologic cancer.
