Hand Specialist

Hand therapy is the dedicated practice of assessment and rehabilitation of the hands and upper extremities. UM Charles Regional Rehabilitation has a designated occupational therapist who specializes in hand therapy, Courtney Massie, MHS, OTR/L who helps improve hand and upper extremity function. Therapeutic interventions may include preventative, non-operative, conservative treatment or post-operative rehabilitation. Your therapist will work closely with you and your physician to develop a treatment program designed to decrease pain and discomfort, increase range of motion and flexibility, improve independence and confidence levels, and prevent the likelihood of re-injury.

Upon referral, your therapist will complete a full evaluation of the affected extremity. Once complete, a comprehensive treatment program is created and tailored to meet your needs. Your therapist will determine which treatments are appropriate at your evaluation and as you progress through our program, may implement the following:

  • Patient education
  • Post-operative rehabilitation
  • Management of acute and chronic pain
  • Protective orthosis fitting/fabrication for immobilization and controlled motion post-operatively and post-injury
  • Development of exercise programs to restore functional motion, strength, and fine motor coordination
  • Sensory re-education following a nerve injury
  • Wound and scar management
  • Application of thermal and electrical modalities to facilitate joint mobility, tendon gliding, decrease hypersensitivity, and minimize pain and inflammation
