Today, University of Maryland Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is the largest provider of inpatient rehabilitation care in the state of Maryland. UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute provides specialized rehabilitation services in each of its four 32-bed units. Each unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary team led by a rehabilitation physician collaborating in quality care delivery with the disciplines of nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, therapeutic recreational, case management and dietary, in addition to consulting with other physician services such as ENT and Urology. UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute has provided inpatient services to over 20,000 patients in the past 10 years.

Spinal Cord Program

The Spinal Cord Injury Program has provided care to over 2,100 patients throughout the past 11 years. The multidisciplinary team's expertise in caring for patients with a spinal cord injury utilizes individual/custom patient treatment plans based on each patient's needs. The unit also offers the Lokomat Machine, a revolutionary technological robotic device, which may be used with paralyzed patients to allow them to use their legs again in a robot-steered treadmill.

Brain Injury Program

The Brain Injury Program is also managed by an expert team of clinically competent staff. The medical director has managed the care of brain injury patients for over 13 years, having served 3,200 patients through comprehensive, structured cognitive remediation, behavior management, and physical rehabilitation sessions. The Brain Injury program works with both patients and families to help patients meet their highest level of functioning. UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is one of only eight centers in the country funded by the National Institute of Health (NIH) in conducting clinical trials for patients with brain injuries.

Stroke Unit

The interdisciplinary team on the Stroke Unit provides functionally-based, individualized evaluation, treatment, education, and training for stroke patients and their families through interdisciplinary care planning among medicine, nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and therapeutic recreation.

On the Stroke Unit, inpatient services are provided at the bedside, therapy offices/gyms, stairways, outdoors and in the community. Group treatment/education services are provided in the gym, patient dining room and throughout the unit. Speech therapists also conduct modified barium video fluoroscopy studies in the Radiology Department. Other sites of service activity include the therapy pool, outdoor treatment spaces, and various community locations used for re-entry programs.

Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Unit

The Comprehensive Medical Rehabilitation Unit provides care to patients who require medical management and comprehensive rehabilitation treatment. Patients with an amputation, orthopaedic injuries, or with medical complications are provided services on this unit. Surgical specialties include total joint replacement, scoliosis, hand and upper extremity services, sports medicine as well as foot and ankle services.

Orthopaedic Inpatient Rehabilitation Program

The state-of-the-art Orthopaedic Inpatient Rehabilitation Program provides daily medical management, education and psychosocial support for patients with a variety of orthopaedic conditions, including joint replacements, multiple fractures and traumas. As they progress through the program, patients gain the strength and confidence they need to recover daily living skills and achieve community re-entry.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services

A broad array of state-of-the-art outpatient rehabilitation services serve the needs of adult and pediatric patients alike. UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute's outpatient therapy programs also offer programs targeting the rehabilitation needs of individuals with spinal cord injuries, stroke or brain injury, multiple sclerosis, arthritis, upper extremity/hand injuries, other orthopaedic injuries, work-related injuries, back injuries and more. UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute's experienced medical professionals -- which include physical therapists, athletic trainers, occupational therapists and speech language pathologists -- work together in multidisciplinary teams to best meet individualized rehabilitation goals.

Therapeutic Initiatives

UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute has also developed a series of therapeutic initiatives to further assist patients with their reintegration into the community. These initiatives include an accessible 2,400 square foot golf putting green with paved accessible pathways leading to it; an adaptive sports court featuring full (84 foot x 50 foot) basketball court and tennis court layouts with removable nets; and a therapeutic healing garden that provides therapeutic respite for both patients and their families.

ICU/Med-Surg/Operating Rooms

UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute uniquely offers an ICU, Med-Surg unit and operating rooms. We have six operating rooms in which over 5,000 surgeries are completed every year. Our large, modern, state-of-the-art operating rooms are available Monday through Friday. The average caseload is approximately 15 cases per day. Approximately 75% of surgeries are outpatients. Major patient populations served include those having elective surgical intervention that includes, but is not limited to, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, podiatry surgery, dental surgery, venous access surgery, urology, otology and sinus surgery.

The Operating Room provides care to patients of all ages (pediatric to geriatric). Patients may be treated as outpatients, same-day surgery patients or inpatients. The team of care providers routinely consists of surgeons, fellows, residents, physician assistants, registered nurse first assistants, anesthesiologists, registered nurses, surgical technologists, central sterile processing technologist and surgical orderlies.

Specialty Services

Additional specialty services include a wound team, orthotics and prosthetics, upper extremity clinic, tone management, adaptive recreational programs, aquatic program, and specialty support groups.

Our outpatient clinics also continue to expand and cover a wide range of specialty areas such as orthopaedics, pediatric orthopaedics, rheumatology, urology, neurology, spasticity, ENT, cleft lip & palate and amputee programs. UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute is also home to the Brain Injury Association of Maryland and the University Imaging Center, which specializes in MRI/CT scans to further support our patients' needs.

Dental Services

The Dental Service provides pediatric and adult general dental services for the local community and the Baltimore, Maryland region. The Dental Service is also a resource for comprehensive dental care for children and adults with special needs. The dental suite has eight dental treatment rooms and areas for X-ray, instrument disinfection and sterilization, laboratory, office and record storage, and patient reception.

The UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute operating room suite includes facilities for dental treatment, including X-rays. The program has been very successful and has generated over 10,000 outpatient clinic visits and over 1,000 surgical cases per year.

Pain Management

The University of Maryland Pain Management Center (PMC) moved to UM Rehabilitation & Orthopaedic Institute in June 2003. Patients who seek specialized treatment come from all over Maryland and surrounding states. The center offers a multidisciplinary approach to pain management, utilizing anesthesiologists who are board certified in pain management, nurses, physical therapists, a pain psychologist, and radiology technicians. All members of the staff work together to treat the whole patient.

Ambulatory Services

The Ambulatory Services Department provides individualized care to pediatric and adult patients with one or more (along a continuum) of a variety of problems related to their primary diagnosis, as well as any co-morbidities.

The Ambulatory Services Department provides a diverse menu of patient care services that include: university and community based orthopedic specialties such as pediatric, spine, sports medicine, upper extremity, total joint and general orthopedic patient care services.

Orthopedic care provided includes casting, fracture care, aspirations, injections, dressing changes, wound care, minor procedures with local anesthesia, removal of staples/sutures, incision and drainage, suturing, minor debridement with local anesthesia, evaluation and treatment of congenital and acquired bone and joint conditions, diagnostic radiology procedures, EMGs, and patient education.

Our interdisciplinary collaboration and consultation with physical therapy, occupational therapy, pain management, integrative medicine, and physician house officers among others ensures the best care possible.
