In addition, he is the director of neurotrauma/neurocritical care in the Division of Neurosurgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). He is also program director of the neurological surgery residency at WRNMMC and the neurosurgery consultant to the Army Surgeon General. He holds an appointment as an assistant professor of surgery within the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He continues to serve as an advisor to multiple Department of Defense committees regarding TBI.

Dr. Dengler has deployed twice in support of the Combined Joint Task Force Operation Inherent Resolve to Baghdad, Iraq, where he served as chief of neurosurgery. Prior to his 2017 assignment to WRNMMC, Dr. Dengler served as the 41st Fires Brigade Surgeon in the 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.
