For Immediate Release August 02, 2023

University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (UM St. Joseph), a member organization of the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS), was one of only 483 hospitals in the nation—and the only hospital in Maryland—to earn five out of five stars from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) in its 2023 Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings report.

CMS created the Five-Star Quality Rating System to help consumers make informed decisions about where to go for healthcare. CMS assessed more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide, rating their performance in five key areas: mortality, safety of care, readmission, timely and effective care and patient experience.

"This designation is especially gratifying because of what it means for our community: access to quality care that is among the best in the nation," says Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer Gail P. Cunningham, MD, FACEP. "Community members can continue to choose UM St. Joseph with confidence that we will deliver leading-edge care and a patient-centered experience."

This is the sixth consecutive time that UM St. Joseph has received CMS' highest rating. "This ongoing achievement is a testament to UM St. Joseph's daily and relentless work to provide consistently safe, effective and compassionate care," says Thomas B. Smyth, MD, President and CEO. "Our continued focus on these quality measures honors UM St. Joseph's mission of service and supports our patients' health and well-being."
