Towson-based Hospital and Member of University of Maryland Medical System Earns National Top Safety Grade for the Sixth Time

University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (UM St. Joseph) has once again been awarded an 'A' grade in Patient Safety from The Leapfrog Group. This latest designation, earned according to the spring 2022 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, marks the sixth such accomplishment for UM St. Joseph and recognizes the Towson hospital's achievements in protecting patients from harm and error.

This national recognition underscores UM St. Joseph's relentless commitment to providing safe, quality health care. The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to improving health care quality and safety for healthcare consumers throughout the nation. The Safety Grade assigns an 'A', 'B', 'C', 'D' or 'F' grade to hospitals across the country based on over 30 national performance measures reflecting errors, injuries, accidents and infections, as well as systems hospitals have in place to prevent harm.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, assigned to more than 2,700 acute care hospitals throughout the U.S., is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harms to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

"UM St. Joseph is proud to be acknowledged for the unwavering and concerted work we do each and every day to protect and care for our patients," said Thomas B. Smyth, MD, UM St. Joseph Medical Center President and CEO. "We are incredibly proud of this recognition as we continue our journey to zero patient harm, clinical excellence and the perfect patient experience."

"As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center for sustained commitment to patient safety, day in and day out, said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. "An 'A' Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud."

"During challenging times, trusting your hospital is more crucial than ever," said Dr. Smyth. "We are proud to demonstrate our community's faith in UM St. Joseph is well warranted."
