Medical Surgical Unit

The Medical-Surgical Unit at University of Maryland Rehab & Ortho (formerly Kernan Hospital) provides award-winning, compassionate, and patient-centered care for a wide range of inpatient conditions. By addressing medical needs while also providing a full range of rehabilitation services, we decrease the amount of time that our patients need to remain away from home as they recover from their illness or injury.

Located on an expansive, tree-lined campus conveniently located off of I-70 and I-695, our unit provides around-the-clock medical care from empathetic, board-certified physicians, advanced practice providers, and nurses. For patients with rehabilitative needs, our physical, occupational, and speech therapists provide state-of-the art services to treat any underlying mobility, self-care, swallowing, or cognitive needs.

As a member of the University of Maryland Medical System, our patients can expect a seamless experience as their care transfers to our hospital, with a shared electronic medical records platform and secure messaging between providers. Consultative services from many types of specialists are available on site and by telemedicine. An outpatient pharmacy adds convenience so that patients may leave with their medications in hand. Once our patients have returned home, a discharge navigator is available to provide remote assistance, easing this important care transition and decreasing the likelihood that they will need to return to the hospital.
