About Me
Dr. Salenger is a heart surgeon. He performs all aspects of adult cardiac surgery, with a special emphasis on mitral valve repair and coronary bypass surgery with arterial grafting. He believes that a specialized team-based approach is the key to delivering care of the highest quality and helping patients achieve optimal recovery.
Dr. Salenger is an associate professor of surgery at University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and chief of cardiac surgery at University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center (UM SJMC). During his time at UM SJMC, the cardiac surgery program has grown significantly in terms of case volume and strengthened its academic partnership with UMSOM.
Dr. Salenger is the project lead for the University of Maryland Medical System's Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Initiative and an executive board member of the ERAS Cardiac Society. He is editor of the ERAS Cardiac Newsletter, which has a national circulation. In addition, he has published numerous studies and lectured internationally on ERAS, patient blood management and minimally invasive valve surgery. He is an ad hoc peer reviewer for The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, The Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and Innovations. He has also served on the planning committee for the High Value Academic Alliance Annual Conference. He is co-chair of the Maryland Health Care Commission Cardiac Services Advisory Committee and past president of the Maryland Cardiac Surgery Quality Initiative.
Dr. Salenger completed his Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine degree (magna cum laude) in the seven-year Medical Education Program at Union College/Albany Medical School, where he was also inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He received his cardiac surgery training at the University of Massachusetts and additional specialized training in mitral valve repair at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.
