About Me
A maternal-fetal medicine specialist, Dr. Townsel provides care to patients with high-risk pregnancies. She believes in patient-centered care and encourages her patients to ask questions.
Dr. Townsel has special interest in helping pregnant patients with conditions such as:
- Complicated maternal disorders (such as chronic hypertension)
- Pregestational (preexisting) diabetes
- Sickle cell disease
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its own tissues)
Dr. Townsel also provides care for pregnancies affected by complex fetal conditions such as multifetal gestations (twins, triplets and higher-order multiples), fetuses with structural anomalies (which can affect a developing baby's body parts) and fetuses with genetic abnormalities. She performs and interprets detailed ultrasound and antenatal testing.
Dr. Townsel is the help lead for the Substance Use in Pregnancy and Parenting Outpatient Recovery and Treatment (SUPPORT) clinic at University of Maryland Medical Center. In 2022, while working at University of Michigan, she received the Silver Speculum award, bestowed to University of Michigan Medical School's top obstetrics and gynecology educator.
A basketball fan, Dr. Townsel particularly enjoys women's college and professional basketball. She is a former women's college basketball player and helps coach her son and daughter.
