Cancer Graduate Training and Education
UMGCCC research faculty participate in a number of graduate programs offered within the School of Medicine, the School of Dentistry, the School of Pharmacy, and the School of Nursing at the University of Maryland, Baltimore, as well as the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and the University of Maryland College Park. Research spans a wide spectrum of biomedical disciplines, and graduates gain the knowledge and skills required for fundamental discovery of novel biological pathways in human health and disease as well as translational research into the development and delivery of medicines for safe and effective cancer therapies. Cancer Biology Training within the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS)
UMGCCC cancer education and training is underpinned by graduate training within the Graduate Program in Life Sciences (GPILS). GPILS is a large graduate umbrella program offering cutting edge research training in basic, biomedical, clinical and population sciences. The Cancer Biology Track
Within the Molecular Medicine Program of GPILS, the Cancer Biology Track provides students with focused education and cutting-edge research training in the biology and treatment of cancer. The molecular, genetic, cell biological and pathobiological aspects of cancer, in addition to the current state of clinical cancer diagnosis and treatment are emphasized.
Students take a unique and innovative GPILS core curriculum along with specialized advanced courses with the goal of training graduate students in the multidisciplinary, hypothesis-driven nature of current biomedical research. Learn more about Cancer Biology Track.

- Bridges to Doctorate Programs
- This is a combined program with the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) and Towson University. The program is for students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the biomedical field who have a bachelor's degree and are interested in earning a PhD in science.
Students in the B2D program complete a master's degree at Towson University while also taking at least one class at UMSOM, attending seminars/workshops on our campus, and completing a 4 week summer research rotation at UMSOM before applying to PhD programs.

- School of Pharmacy Graduate Program
- UMGCCC faculty within the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy mentor students obtaining graduate degrees focused on the discovery, development, and use of medicines through the Department of Pharmacy Practice & Science (PPS), the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences (PSC) and the Department of Pharmaceutical Health Services Research (PHSR).
- School of Nursing Graduate Program
- Under the mentorship of UMGCCC faculty, students may obtain the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in nursing and the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP).
- PhD in Oral and Experimental Pathology
- This specialty training program provides broad education and research training in oral and experimental pathology as well as specializations in anatomic and surgical pathology.
- PhD for Clinicians Program
- The PhD Program for Clinicians provides a rigorous, accelerated curriculum to train medical scientists for careers in basic or translational research in association with the research component of existing accredited University of Maryland Medical Center residency and fellowship programs. PhD's are awarded through the Graduate Program in Life Sciences. These programs include: Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Epidemiology & Human Genetics, Gerontology, Molecular Medicine, Molecular Microbiology & Immunology, Neuroscience, and Physical Rehabilitative Science (UMSOM's PhD for Clinicians).
Dual Degree Programs
- MD/PhD (MSTP) Program
- The combined dual degree MD/PhD program at the University of Maryland provides outstanding aspiring physician scientists with broad biomedical training mentored by UMGCCC faculty. The degree consists of rigorous research training in the basic sciences, resulting in a PhD, complemented by inter-related clinical training that leads to the MD degree. The MD is combined with a Ph.D. program is offered in the following areas: Biochemistry, Molecular Medicine, Molecular Microbiology and Immunology, Neuroscience, Toxicology, Epidemiology and Public Health.
- DDS/PhD Program
- The DDS/PhD Program offered through the University of Maryland School of Dentistry under the mentorship of UMGCCC faculty is designed to prepare outstanding clinical and basic biomedical scientists, thoroughly versed in the science underlying clinical practice and capable of identifying and addressing significant problems in oral health and oral cancer.

- The MD/MPH Program offered through the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health and mentored by UMGCCC faculty provides health professionals the opportunity for formal training in public health through specializations in community and population health, epidemiology and global health.
