Dr. Andrea Bafford is an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. As an undergraduate, she received her B.S. in Biology from Cornell University, where she graduated summa cum laude. She went on to receive her M.D. from the Washington University School of Medicine.
Dr. Bafford completed both an internship and residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School. She also completed a colon and rectal surgery fellowship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, NY. Dr. Bafford is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery.
As a surgeon, Dr. Bafford's special interests include laparoscopic and robotic colon and rectal surgery, surgical treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, sphincter-sparing surgery for colorectal cancer, surgery for anorectal disorders, laparoscopic treatment of diverticulitis, treatment of rectal prolapse, and screening and therapeutic colonoscopy. She is a fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons.
Dr. Bafford has authored or co-authored numerous publications in leading peer-reviewed scientific journals and textbooks. Her research interests are in the microbiology of and surgical management of inflammatory bowel disease.
Dr. Bafford was named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of Colo-Rectal Surgery by Baltimore magazine in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
