Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland/Sheppard Pratt Psychiatry Residency Program.

Our residents train in a variety of diverse settings under the supervision of expert faculty members where they learn to treat every patient as an individual deserving of an individualized treatment plan taking into account the full range of biological, psychological, and social issues impacting their lives and health.

Our training sites include an academic medical center, a freestanding psychiatric hospital, various State hospitals and community clinics, and a VA Medical Center. Through the training at these various sites, our residents learn to care for a diverse group of patients from a broad range of socioeconomic backgrounds. They receive training in all aspects of psychiatry. The educational value of caring for our diverse patient population is enhanced by intensive supervision, a comprehensive didactic curriculum, and case conferences.

This comprehensive training takes place in the context of a training program devoted to the wellness and professional and personal growth of each of our residents. Each resident is assigned a faculty advisor who meets with them regularly and connects them with other faculty members depending on their specific interests.

Our Wellness Program includes wellness days, an all residency retreat, social activities funded by the training office, and we maintain a list of area therapists for residents seeking their own personal therapy. Residents are involved in all our educational committees in order to provide ongoing, real-time feedback on ways that we can improve our program.

Our residents come into our program with diverse interests and from diverse backgrounds. We find this diversity leads to a vibrant and enriching experience. We are committed to recruiting a diverse group of residents into our program and maintaining an inclusive environment. We are also dedicated to caring for our local community in Baltimore. To this end the residency program and the department of psychiatry has engaged in a variety of social justice initiatives.

Given the comprehensive nature of our program, our graduates have succeeded in whatever aspect of psychiatry they chose to pursue in their post-residency years, including as academic clinical educators, subspecialists, full-time research psychiatrists, community psychiatrists, private practitioners and psychoanalysts/psychotherapists.

We believe that we have an exceptional training program that is enhanced by having a large faculty dedicated to teaching and residents who are actively engaged in pursuing their education.
We look forward to telling you more about our diverse, exciting, and vibrant program.

Sincerely,
