Here at University of Maryland, we support a positive work-life balance.

Through a balanced experience of inpatient and outpatient rotations, with ample opportunities for individualization of curriculum, learning in the hospital is meaningful and career focused. Each resident has a call-free rotation each year with other electives requiring limited cross-cover or sick-call, allowing for continued exploration of outside interests and self-exploration.

Residents have four-weeks off per year, in addition to one four-day holiday. Pediatric Residents also have 2 wellness days per year, which can be used at the resident’s discretion during outpatient rotations.

Each year, residents have protected time off for class retreats. During their second year, residents have a retreat dedicated to destigmatizing burnout and promoting ongoing resilience in the face of difficult situations. During regular check-ins with education leadership, residents are able to discuss concerns and access resources across the institution as needed, including confidential employee assistance and mental health professionals.
