Welcome to the Ophthalmology Residency at the University of Maryland!

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences has a long-standing tradition of providing the highest-level of clinical and surgical training within a collegial, academic environment while providing excellent clinical care to patients with eye disorders.

We do all this while conducting research to further our understanding of eye diseases to pave the way for future therapies.

Through our award winning faculty, state of the art facilities, and extensive network of clinical sites and referring professionals from throughout the region, our residents receive an unsurpassed breadth of knowledge and depth of experience in comprehensive ophthalmology and in the subspecialties. The Residency offers a diverse array of didactic, clinical activities, simulated and live surgery as well as research immersion, from science laboratory programs to clinical trials. There are opportunities for residents to study research questions of their own interest and to pursue innovative approaches within an interdisciplinary, collaborative environment.

We are particularly proud of our record in teaching, which is a core mission of our department. Our residents have been very successful in securing competitive fellowship positions, and going on to thrive as effective associates and leaders in both the community and academic settings. The remarkable growth in our Department and collegial long-term relationships is the result of the close, friendly interactions between faculty and residents, enriched by the shared philosophy at our hospitals, and outpatient clinical settings. This culture of education is the hallmark of what makes the University of Maryland an ideal institution to learn, grow, and discover.

We invite you to learn more about our Department and visit us so that you can experience first-hand the unparalleled training that our residency program provides in preparing the ophthalmologists of today as visionaries of tomorrow.
