Our residency program offers a mix of diagnostic training and the technical skills needed for minimally invasive interventions from nationally and internationally recognized leaders in vascular, neurovascular, trauma and cross-sectional interventional techniques.

It is the philosophy of the Department that residency training is most effective one-on-one. Our residents will read, discuss, observe while working closely with faculty. Trainees can expect to develop excellent clinical and procedural abilities along with abundant academic experience appropriate for a career in private or academic practice. Our residents perform an average of 1100+ procedures per year.

The University of Maryland Medical Center is a busy tertiary care hospital, a designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, and a level one trauma center which houses the world renowned Shock Trauma.

Trainees gain tremendous experience in:

  • Interventional Oncology (ablation, TACE, TARE, IRE, etc.)
  • Transplant interventions (TIPS, BRTO, portal vein recanalization)
  • Gastrointestinal
  • Genitourinary, dialysis
  • Arteriography
  • Women's health
  • Men's health
  • Venous intervention
  • IVC filter interventions
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Musculoskeletal interventions
  • Lymphangiography
  • Pediatric interventions
  • Vascular and interventional procedures.

Diagnostic skills are maintained by interpretation of CTAs, MRAs, and review of cross-sectional imaging. Trainees attend IR clinic and tumor boards, a 4-week rotation in Surgical ICU and a 4-week rotation in trauma/vascular surgery round out broad clinical exposure.

Consultations

Inpatient and outpatient consultations make up a significant portion of the daily practice of radiology. The radiologist assumes the role of mentor to referring physicians, peers, and technologists. All radiologists must be and are teachers. For this reason, all residents are well versed in educational principles and have the responsibility and opportunity to hone their teaching skills by instructing medical students and fellow residents in varied educational formats throughout the residency.

Research

Research by residents is strongly encouraged and supported by the department. There are many research opportunities available in the division, including novel projects or participation in ongoing prospective single- and multi-center trials.

Six full-time faculty, three Nurse Practitioners, Independent, Integrated, and ESIR residents, junior residents, and medical students staff the division. The five interventional suites include two Siemens Artis Zeego units, two Siemens Artis Zee biplane units, and a Cannon Infinix-i 4DCT Aquilion PRIME/ONE VISION hybrid CT/fluoro room. The Department of Radiology also boasts similarly advanced and cutting-edge equipment and is constantly involved in advancing the level of care for our patients through quality improvement and technological advancement, in support of the Division of Vascular and Interventional Radiology and the Department as a whole.
