The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship program at the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center/University of Maryland Medical Center is an Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education accredited program for a total of 8 positions.

Prerequisites

Qualified applicants should meet the following prerequisites:

  • Completion of ACGME-accredited general surgery residency
  • Board eligibility or certification by the American Board of Surgery
  • Established ability as a teacher of medical students and residents

Curriculum

The fellowship year is divided into 12 monthly rotations.

Core Rotations

  • 2 months: Trauma Surgery
  • 1 month:  Acute Care Emergency Surgery
  • 2 months: Multi-Trauma Critical Care Unit
  • 2 months: Neuro-Trauma Critical Care Unit
  • 2 months: Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • 1 month:  Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit
  • 1 month:  Critical Care Echocardiography

Elective

  • 1 month

  • Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET) Course
  • Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) Instructor Course
  • Advanced Trauma Operative Management (ATOM) Course

  • Fundamental Critical Care Support (FCCS) Course
  • Leading Edge:  Echocardiography and Ultrasound Course
  • Mastering Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT) Course
