Basic & Translational Research

Basic & translational research at University of Maryland links fundamental neuroscience research to clinical applications. Laboratory research explores molecular mechanisms and techniques in cerebral edema, cancer therapeutic delivery, neuronal activation regulation, and neuro-regeneration.

Efforts are led by Dr. J. Marc Simard, Dr. Graeme Woodworth, Dr. Anthony Kim, Dr. Alex Ksendzovsky, and Dr. Xiaofeng Jia in collaboration with the Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) and the Greenbaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Clinical Research

The Department of Neurosurgery participates in multi- and single-center clinical trials for the management of stroke, subarachnoid hemorrhage, intracerebral and intraventricular hemorrhage, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury and focused ultrasound in treatment for essential tremor, Parkinson's disease, neuropathic pain, and glioblastoma.
