Chronic hip pain can slow you down and keep you from living your life to the fullest. When non-surgical treatments have not sufficiently eased your pain or improved your mobility, it may be time to consider whether hip replacement surgery may be right for you.

The orthopedic surgeons and the Joint Center at UM Upper Chesapeake Health will create a plan, based on your overall health and lifestyle, that gets you back to where you want to be.

During this joint replacement procedure, the surgeon will extract the damaged portion of your hip and replace it with parts typically made of ceramic or metal. These parts connect to create a new ball and socket joint that allows for smooth, comfortable and pain-free movement.

Chronic hip pain and decreased mobility may result from:

  • Osteoarthritis
  • Hip fracture or other injury
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Wear and tear of the hip joint

Our orthopedic surgeons are highly trained experts specializing in:

Total Hip Replacement

Total hip replacement surgery replaces the head of the thigh-bone (ball) and socket to create smooth surfaces so the joint can move comfortably. During the procedure, the damaged surfaces are replaced while leaving the majority of the bone around the hip intact and allowing you to regain the pain-free movement you have lost.

Anterior Hip Replacement

Our orthopedics team is one of the few surgical practices who perform the anterior approach to total hip arthroplasty (AATHA), a tissue-sparing alternative to traditional hip replacement surgery that provides the potential for less pain, faster recovery and improved mobility because the muscle tissues are spared during the surgical procedure.

Robotic Arm-Assisted Hip Replacement

An innovative, and minimally invasive surgical technique, robotic arm-assisted surgery can be used in total hip replacement for adults living with early to mid-stage osteoarthritis. X-rays taken prior to surgery are used to develop a 3-D virtual animation that guides the surgeon during the procedure. The technique allows for optimal positioning of the joint implant, creating a better fit, a more natural motion following surgery and a quicker recovery time.
