School of Nursing History

University of Maryland St Joseph Medical Center, founded by the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia in 1864, has a rich history of providing loving service and compassionate care every touch, every time. With nurses being in high demand, the hospital, formerly known as St. Joseph German Hospital, established and opened the School of Nursing in 1901. In 1965, St. Joseph Hospital moved to its current location in Towson, MD. The School of Nursing graduated its last class of nurses in 1988, and we are proud of the graduates who remain employed at UM St. Joseph Medical Center today.
