What to Expect at the ER: Our priority is to treat each person in our emergency rooms as fully, safely and quickly as possible. We see patients based on how serious their conditions are. Patients are not seen on a first-come, first-served basis. Learn more about what to expect at the ER.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Emergency Department (ED) is committed to treating every patient quickly and accurately with the most effective specialty care possible. Our experienced physicians, nurses and technicians on staff have the proper procedures in place to treat severe illnesses and injuries.

The ED provides three separate services:

  • Emergency Care for severe illness or injury
  • Urgent Care for less severe conditions
  • Follow-up appointments

Registration and Triage

When you arrive, you will register and provide basic information. A nurse will perform triage, which involves assessing your illness or injury to determine how severe your condition is. Triage will let us know if you need emergency care or urgent care.

Diagnosis and Treatment

An experienced emergency provider will then examine you. If necessary, diagnostic tests will be ordered. We provide a detailed analysis to ensure the most accurate diagnosis so that serious emergencies receive quick specialty care.

Depending on the type of tests ordered, results may take anywhere from 20 minutes to several hours.

Immediate Access to Specialty Care

In many cases, what patients need is direct access to top specialists once emergency physicians have diagnosed their condition.

Besides experienced emergency medicine professionals, UM St. Joseph Medical Center offers a roster of on-call specialists.

These specialty areas include:

Visitors

Your family and friends provide support for you and information for us that can assist in your diagnosis and treatment. However, because of the nature of emergency treatment, we must limit the number of visitors to two. We suggest that one family member communicate with other family and friends in the waiting area.

Billing

In accordance with Maryland law, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Emergency Department physician, radiology services and hospital services are each billed separately.

  • Physician services are provided by Osler Drive Emergency Physicians Association (ODEPA)
  • Radiology services are provided by Advanced Radiology, Inc.

Please be aware that state legislation requires hospitals to bill treatment within our Emergency Department at hospital-based rates, whether the treatment is rendered in the Urgent or Emergency care areas. Insurance carriers may vary in their reimbursement for these services.
