Thank you for your interest in the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) Midtown Campus categorical Internal Medicine program and Transitional Year program! I am excited to serve as the program director for both programs, and am pleased to introduce you to the institution, our residents, and the faculty. We invite you to explore our program and its curriculum; we are confident that you, like our current residents, will like what you see. Our overall educational objectives are to help you develop your knowledge, skills, and competencies in a nurturing, supportive environment. We aspire to provide the comprehensive resources, diverse clinical exposures, and personal support that you need to be successful in reaching your career goals.

UMMC Midtown Campus has enjoyed a rich history of leadership in academic and clinical medicine in Baltimore. It maintains a strong reputation in the community, and is proud of its legacy of being a community hospital committed to serving its surrounding diverse community. In its pursuit of the highest standards in education and patient care, the hospital joined the University of Maryland Medical System in 1999, resulting in a partnership that provides patients and trainees with access to the resources and expertise of one of the largest and oldest research and teaching healthcare systems in the United States. Though UMMC Midtown Campus is now closely aligned with a state- of- the- art tertiary medical center at the Downtown Campus, the Midtown Campus maintains its community hospital atmosphere and feel. To better meet the needs of the community, a new comprehensive ambulatory medicine center is being constructed on our campus. Today, UMMC Midtown Campus is a growing, dynamic institution with a rich heritage and visionary future.

The Department of Medicine at UMMC Midtown Campus and its growing faculty has enjoyed a long-standing commitment to excellence in postgraduate medical education. The Internal Medicine training program was established in 1954 and the Transitional Program in 1983. Over the past 60 years, the programs have evolved and improved in their continuous efforts to foster excellence in clinical skills and medical knowledge among its residents and to nurture academic training opportunities. The curriculum offers clinical rotations in each of the subspecialties of Internal Medicine, a breadth of elective experiences and educational resources, and an institution-wide atmosphere of interdisciplinary cooperation. The programs are committed to creating a supportive environment in which a self-motivated, goal-driven resident will thrive and excel.

The Internal Medicine Training Program is based at the UMMC Midtown Campus but includes rotations at the UMMC Downtown Campus and the Baltimore Veterans Affairs Medical Center (BVAMC). Opportunities exist for residents to take advantage of our close relationship with the University of Maryland Medical System and its renowned faculty. In 2014, the world-class University of Maryland Center for Diabetes and Endocrinology moved its regional practice to the Midtown Campus. The University of Maryland Sleep Disorders Laboratory has also relocated here to our campus. The ambulatory practices of the University of Maryland Divisions of Infectious Diseases and Pulmonary Medicine have also been relocated to the Midtown Campus. As a result, more medical school faculty members from the University Campus are providing clinical care onsite and also actively participating in the education program at the Midtown Campus. Residents will have the opportunity to train on the Midtown campus with nationally recognized specialists and researchers in their respective fields, who also attract a wide and diverse referral base of patients.
