About Me

Dr. Suntha is a radiation oncologist. He specializes in treating cancers of the head, neck and esophagus.

Dr. Suntha first joined the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) in 1995 as an assistant professor. In addition to his clinical practice in radiation oncology, Dr. Suntha has held numerous administrative roles within the University of Maryland Medical System (UMMS) and UMSOM. He served as vice chairman of the Department of Radiation Oncology at UMSOM and was associate director of clinical affairs at the University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center (UMGCCC), where he is professor of radiation oncology.

In 2009, Dr. Suntha served as vice president for system program development for UMMS. In December 2012, he was appointed president and CEO of University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center. In May 2016, after a nationwide search, Dr. Suntha was named president and CEO of University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), which includes the Shock Trauma Center, Children’s Hospital and UMGCCC as well as UMMC Midtown Campus. In December 2019, he was appointed president and CEO of UMMS.

Dr. Suntha’s research focuses on patients diagnosed with carcinomas of the head, neck and esophagus. He has conducted numerous investigator-initiated combined modality clinical trials aimed at improving therapeutic outcomes of these diseases. These trials have attempted to define optimal ways to deliver chemotherapy and radiation concurrently, either as definitive therapy or in the neoadjuvant setting prior to surgical resection.

Dr. Suntha completed his residency training in radiation oncology at UMSOM. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Brown University in 1986 and his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in 1990. In May 2009, he earned his Master of Business Administration degree from The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania).

Dr. Suntha was named a "Top Doctor" in the specialty of radiation oncology by Baltimore Magazine in 2007, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2016. In 2022, the Maryland Daily Record named him an "Influential Marylander" honoree in the health care category.
